After four years and more than $650,000 in office orders, here is my answer: Herman Miller is worth it—but only when you buy the right model for the right person. The brand name will not fix a bad sitting habit. If you are shopping for a herman miller executive office chair because the title makes it sound important, you may end up paying for the wrong thing.

I am not a furniture consultant. I am the office administrator for a 320-person company. I manage about $180,000 a year in orders across 9 vendors. This is what I learned the hard way.

Why I Have a Strong Opinion

I took over purchasing in 2020, in the middle of the home-office panic. Since then, we have outfitted two offices, replaced 180 chairs, and consolidated our vendor list from 13 to 9. The March 2023 vendor failure changed how I think about delivery dates. We ordered 60 sit-stand desks and were told 'estimated delivery in 2 weeks.' They showed up 3 weeks late, and the CEO's site visit happened in a half-empty office. That is when I stopped trusting estimated dates and started asking for a confirmed delivery date on every order.

The same logic applies to chairs. A warranty that nobody services is just a PDF. A model that does not fit is a very expensive guest chair.

What Changed Between 2020 and 2025

What was best practice in 2020 may not apply in 2025. In 2020, people bought any chair that would ship. Today, the market has matured. The fundamentals haven't changed: sit with your feet flat, arms at 90 degrees, monitor at eye level. But the execution has transformed. Hybrid work means the same employee might use a chair in an office in the morning and another chair at home in the afternoon. You cannot order a single default model and be done.

Executive Chair or Mesh Chair

A herman miller executive office chair usually means a taller back and often leather. It looks like a status symbol, and that is the problem. That thinking comes from an era when the chair was a sign of rank. Today, ergonomics are the status symbol. If you want the best long-term investment for most bodies, a herman miller mesh office chair is a safer default.

Mesh breathes, which matters in a 40-person open office. Mesh also does not soak up coffee or perfume the way padded fabric does. Not the most glamorous reason, but someone will spill something, and you will be glad you chose mesh.

Mesh hides nothing, but it also does not absorb the last person's lunch.

That line from a facilities manager says it better than I can. The counterintuitive part: the most expensive version is not automatically the most ergonomic. The Aeron and Embody are engineered for adjustability. The 'executive' label adds leather and height, not necessarily lumbar support. And the Aeron comes in sizes: A, B, C. If you order 30 B-size chairs, the 5-foot-2 intern and the 6-foot-4 engineer will both be in the wrong geometry. Trust me on this: measure the person, then pick the chair.

The Office Is Bigger Than Furniture

Herman Miller is a brand, but an office is a system. Three non-furniture things have taught me more than any brochure.

A 'Bamboo Labs' Request Taught Me to Look Past Typos

When the maintenance team sent a purchase request for a 'bamboo labs 3d printer'—the actual brand is Bambu Lab—I nearly said no. We have a large-format printer and a plotter. I did not want another gadget. Then they showed me the things they were 3D printing: a bracket for a paper towel dispenser, a spacer for a monitor arm, a cap for a table leg. The printer paid for itself in two months. The lesson: a misspelled product name is not a reason to ignore the need behind it.

A3 vs A4 Paper Is a Real Spec, Not a Guessing Game

The a3 vs a4 paper question sounds basic, but people mix them all the time. A4 is 210 x 297 mm. A3 is 297 x 420 mm. A3 is exactly twice the area of A4, not 'a bit bigger.' If the office printer only handles A4, an A3 job means a trip to the print shop. If your vendor says 'the file is A4,' the sign will be the wrong size.

Print resolution matters even more. Commercial print works best at 300 DPI at final size. A 3000-pixel-wide image at 300 DPI prints 10 inches wide. For A3 width (420 mm, about 16.5 inches), you need roughly 4,960 pixels. I learned this when a 200-sign training event came back with a logo that looked like a jellyfish. Not ideal.

And if your logo is a Pantone spot color, do not assume the CMYK version matches. The color tolerance for brand-critical work is Delta E < 2. Between 2 and 4, a trained eye can notice it; above 4, everyone sees it. Our blue is not supposed to turn purple.

Use a Cylinder Volume Calculator Before You Order

Another small thing: I used a cylinder volume calculator before ordering 14 desk-side bins. The product spec said 12 inches in diameter and 30 inches tall. Under our sit-stand desks in the lowered position, the clearance was 28 inches. I nearly skipped the measurement, thinking: what are the odds? The odds were exactly 100%. The volume formula is V = π r² h. A 12-inch diameter gives a radius of 6, so a 28-inch tall bin is around 3,167 cubic inches. The 30-inch version only added about 226 cubic inches, but it would not have fit. We changed the order to 28-inch bins and avoided 14 return labels.

When I Would Not Buy Herman Miller

Now the honest part. I would not buy a $1,400 chair for every person in every building.

  • If someone sits less than three hours a day, a good mid-tier chair is enough.
  • If the office is a co-working space with no assigned desks, the 12-year warranty matters less than a chair that can be easily replaced.
  • If someone has chronic back pain, a chair alone is not the cure. They need a sit-stand desk, a monitor arm, and a doctor, not just a bigger budget line.

A Herman Miller chair will not fix a workstation that is set up badly. One of our best engineers had the lumbar support pointing at his rib because nobody showed him how to adjust it. That is not a chair problem. That is a training problem.

So, buy the chair. But measure the person, the desk, and the room. Then double-check the paper size and the delivery date. The extra five minutes will save you more money than the discount code ever will.
